Site updates

Firstly, check out this picture I found last year (I didn't have a blog then, so I couldn't share it anywhere).

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
The "Transformers" -- Darth Vader version. It's capable of transforming into Vader's TIE X1 fighter! Notice the TIE X1 cockpit on his chest... the stabilizer fins behind...

OK. Now, I've made some updates in my list of links!

3 new sites are added to the "Star Wars" list:

TheForce.net (the most famous unofficial SW site)

Another site where one can find a treasure trove of movie stills of Attack of the Clones.

"The Darth Side", where someone did a blog on the possible thoughts of Darth Vader throughout the course of the Star Wars saga. It's very interesting, I tell you.

Under "Christian Sites", I've added the official website for Sy Rogers, an evangelist who came to our church quite a few times. I watched his life testimony video on my church website recently and liked it very much.

In that video, he talked about how he was deprived of love in the past and how he wanted masculine love so much that he became a homosexual, and how he eventually encountered Christ in a personal and powerful way.

One thing he talked about was the way Christians evangelize... about some Christians talking about punishment in Hell more than about the Saviour. At the time when he did not know Christ yet, and was bothered by Christians who only told him what he did was wrong, and nothing else. He said something like this to God...

"I'll do what I want on my way to Hell, and I hope it hurts you."

People cannot be saved if all we tell them about is hell.

In the end (probably because many of his friends prayed for him), just before he did the sex-change operation, Christ personally came to him and he felt the presence of God very strongly. He thought of changing his ways and asked God for a sign as to how he should proceed.

Just a few days later, the doctors who advocated the sex-change clinic in his country decided to shut down the whole clinic , stating that , according to their findings, sex-change was not medically beneficial for the individual.

Amazing, isn't it?

Anyway, these are just some updates on my site, in case you didn't notice.

Incomplete: by Backstreet Boys

Empty spaces fill me up with holes
Distant faces with no place left to go
Without you within me I can’t find no rest
Where I’m going is anybody’s guess

I’ve tried to go on like I never knew you
I’m awake but my world is half asleep
I pray for this heart to be unbroken
But without you all I’m going to be is incomplete

Voices tell me I should carry on
But I am swimming in an ocean all alone
Baby, my baby
It’s written on your face
You still wonder if we made a big mistake

I’ve tried to go on like I never knew you
I’m awake but my world is half asleep
I pray for this heart to be unbroken
But without you all I’m going to be is incomplete

I don’t mean to drag it on, but I can’t seem to let you go
I don’t wanna make you face this world alone
I wanna let you go (alone)

Heard this song quite long ago, and I sort of liked it (BSB is one of my favourite bands)... Heh. It's also in E Major key, one of my favourite keys.

The maths behind my brains.

I don't know why I gave my post this title.

Anyway, yesterday was a nice day with lots of fun and laughter... evening was not a bad one either... I mugged at McDonalds White Sands.

Everytime I reach home, I always have to walk pass the rubbish dump to get to the elevators. I don't mind that, except that yesterday night the rubbish dump was so smelly that I arrived at my house feeling giddy. I don't even want to begin describing the smell.

Today was perfect. 9 to 5 at the College Library. Well not quite... as I did take a lunch break (after a "Dynamics" morning) and added this silly-looking "opening crawl" to my blog...

Yeah, so you can finally see my blog title within the page itself, not just on the... the... what bar do you call that? The... "title-bar"?

What am I blaberring about anyway?

I've just been shaken from the impact of doing the 2003 Mathc June Common Test Paper. I even forgot most of the stuff in Continuous Random Variables (which was a very recent topic)!

And while I decided that it should be the first time I'm doing a paper under "exam conditions", I went off halfway to read this Readers' Digest jokes compilation book. And I didn't laugh much.

Things are not so grim after all (I can say that after drilling Maths stuff into my brain later).

Hope Kelvin recovered from fever already.

7 days to the end of June Common Test.

Understanding

This morning I consulted Mr Desai on some Physics problems... first time leh!

I can say that I gained some understanding on topics like Dynamics.

I don't think Yulan has a tagboard in her blog yet.

Oh, is HO playing Tong Hua, as in the one sang by Guang Liang? Oh my goodness... that's a nice song!

In the afternoon, I met Darren and NCC in College, and learned that, like me, they hadn't touched their Maths stuff too(which rendered me shocked and relieved all at once).

I followed them for lunch and joined them at the library after that. Darren was tuning to radio using his handphone and we went on to talk about music (who cares about mugging?)... and we kept on doing silly actions for some songs we're listening to (like Ocean's "6-coloured Rainbow").

In the end the 2 of them left early because... who could mug in an environment like this? So I was alone in the library doing summary for my OOP notes. Until 6 p.m..

That geekish-ish, I am not.

Oh my goodness... Junqun put this video up in the "secret place" for IT Club and... well, I don't know whether it entertains you but I'm just putting this up here to share.

Click to see how crazy some Star Wars Nerds can get...

I was surprised that when the dog (I just learned that he's called Triump the "insult dog") approached "Vader", Vader did not just strangle it. I mean, those who know Vader would know that strangling is like a second nature to him. Haha.

And I'll not have a StarWars wedding with Lightsaber archs and everything. Never.

I'm not that of a geek... really, and I know life goes on and I cannot get too much into SW. It will not take over my life.

I hope. No, I pray.

Printed my Object-oriented Programming notes this morning (finally!) and met Maoxin while I was having lunch.

Looks like most of us are having problems sticking to pure mugging in our free times.

No DotA today. Thank you.

But today I've finally run a satisfactory check through a sufficient number of threads in the Forums sections I'm supposed to be overseeing. The last time I did such a thorough check was... I couldn't even remember when. I've made myself way too busy these days.

But I'm still a moderator and I'm honoured to be one. Can't wait to become a "Moderator Mentor" (I suggested this title to be used for stepped-down moderators. Heh).

Just some updates

It's not that I've been too busy to blog these days.

It's just that my days have been so monotonous... just mugging and DotA-ing (yes I did play some DotA to chill out)... nothing much lah.

But, for the sake of keeping this page active...

I've still been doing summary for my Computing notes... and I hope to finish the "Operating Systems" part (comprising 9 chapters!) by today. I started doing this set of notes last Friday (Day 1 of ITC June Camp) and I think I took long enough.

No TV for me (I lost hope in TV long ago, unlike dear Kelvin who just blogged about TV) and I spend my free time reading novels (good substitutes for TV shows)... but I had to leave my newly bought "Star Warped" aside. It's too funny to be read in such a time as this. Will save it after JCT.

Talk about books, I came across this SW Clone Wars novel called "Jedi Trial" yesterday. The reason I will buy this book soon is because it's about Anakin's trial to become a full-fledged Jedi Knight, and also it features Nejaa Halcyon, the biological grandfather of Corran Horn (my favourite character from SW novels).

The Omnibus which compiles the novelisation of "Revenge of the Sith" and the novel "Labyrinth of Evil" will be out (thank goodness it's paperback -- I don't like hardcovers) near the end of November. Good for me, since it's probably after the 'A' levels.

And I hope it's not too expensive.

I had a haircut yesterday and it was quite good. One looks healthier with shorter hair. Don't know why, but that's what I think.

By the way, while searching for cool pictures for use of avatars (user display picture) in my College Forums, it just so happened that I came across these pictures which are... erm... cool. Yeah.

What you would have seen if you unmask Darth Vader in his early years. I don't know how they got this picture, though.

Compare the previous picture with this one, which is Vader unmasked when he was in his forties.

Sayonara for now.

The post with the greatest mood change. Ever.

Yes I mean that in this post there're gonna be 2 different matters of absolutely different moods.

Good news first.

Yesterday I went to Times Bookshop and... oh my gosh! I found something!

Well, if you didn't know about such a thing, there had been a series of parodies written for Harry Potter (Barry Trotter) and Lord of the Rings (Bored of the Rings). I saw this parody of the Da Vinci Code (the "Va Dinci Cod" which has this damn hilarious cover!).

And some more, I saw... "Star Warped"! And yes, it's a parody of Star Wars, written by "A.R.R.R. Roberts" (who did the parody of LOTR by J.R.R. Tolkien).

Oh my goodness.

The reason why I went to buy the book this morning was because it's got all the 6 episodes in it (which means I don't have to buy a whole series of thick small hardcovers). The prequels part is a bit short, though.

The most funny term I found in that book (so far) was the "Imperial Empire of the Imperium".

So I went back to College in this very nice mood and even scanned an image for the book's cover...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

And the mood stayed on until I went on Forums.

I got the shock of my life.

See this post. About the new ITC Exco.

I wanna make this clear.

Fatima, you are writing this post from the point of view that the Chairperson and Vice-chair are necessarily higher posts than Project leader.

And you said that it's unfair that Yufeng didn't get to be C or VC, I suppose? That the guys we appointed for C and VC are NATO (no-action-talk-only) ? Huh?

I tell you, you can say that we're a biased bunch, but I tell you. I think Yufeng is a likeable guy and I was one of the Exco members who wanted him to be Project leader the most.

I know he's the one who co-ordinated the whole shopping thing and basically the starting of fire, not to mention the whole BBQ session. He was the one flipping the chicken wings and sausages and crabsticks and whatever.

We saw all these too.

I don't know what the other Exco members were thinking, but I wanna say this: That because (NOT despite) of all these stuff I mentioned above, I supported the decision to make him Project Leader.

Based on my experiences this year...

I think the Chairperson and Vice-chair are those who -- Yes I know -- co-ordinate the club meetings and liase with outside people and so on. Of course, they chair Exco meetings. Seem like "higher positions" to most.

And I think the Project Leader is one who has to be committed outside meetings (you gotta lead group members and do stuff for competitions etc. at your own time) and, of course, have skills. After seeing Yufeng's performance during June Camp, I think he's the ideal choice for PL.

Not that See Shuen or Joel Long are not fit to be PLs, but while I think See Shuen is also a good choice for PL (he has the skills), we need more serious (forgive me if this sounds wierd but I'm not sure how to phrase it) people for C and VC posts. The 2 guys work quite well together and would make good partners in the ITC Exco, I believe.

Maybe my stand is affected by personal experience. And my point of view is definitely valid.

You may not know that I was one of the former Project Leaders. And why may you not know? Because I didn't find any projects for you guys to do. And why the case? Because I didn't have the qualities of a PL (experience, ability to interact, human resource management skills... etc.). I didn't have the time and the opportunities to learn. I didn't even run for this post, by the way. After my failure in the Exco, I really want to see to the recruitment of more experienced PLs.

Now I'm not saying that PL is a higher post than C and VC. No such thing either.

What pissed me off further is the way you flamed the other Exco members as if they're worthless.

So what if someone doesn't know how to set up the fire for BBQ?

Do you want a situation in which, say, I stand beside the really experienced fire-starter (since I claim to have "leadership qualities") and start bossing around? I may even be an unnecessary distraction and cause the fire-starting process to be slowed down!

I was surprised you could even link BBQ skills with the ITC Chairperson post. And you mean one who doesn't know the essential skills for BBQ is not fit to be chairperson? What kind of logic is that?

And please, if you don't want to support your new new Exco by attending meetings... by all means. And that also means that you won't get to support your new PL by taking part in small projects (or big ones)... that you will probably pull Lala out of the club... while eventually, the C and VC can suceed as C and VC, and the 2 PLs can suceed as good PLs.

No PEARLS points already, anyway. And if LEP is so enriching and so free of "losers"...

I'm trying to keep in control.

No hard feelings. I do want you to stay in the club and give the new Exco (or at least the new PL, if that's the only member you like) a chance to shine.

And stop flaming people and calling them losers. I don't know how to start fire for BBQ either.

P.S.

Sorry Ken Chiu, if you think I didn't make mention of you, that's because you were not involved in the flaming (or so I think). Maybe you were... but then again, I think you'll make a good PL as well.

Yufeng, I seriously hope you don't think the way Fatima did (I know you won't). And you'll shine as a PL.

See Shuen and Joel, we (the old Exco) knew what we're doing. Be strong.

And Joel, you'd better think again about being Rep for all the subjects (if you still are). I'll talk to you about it soon.

ITC June Camp

The IT Club June camp was held on Friday and Saturday.

Friday morning was... erm moving computers for the year two guys. We often jokingly say that IT Club has moved computers so often that it's almost becoming a sports CCA. That day we moved more than 10 computers... or even more than 20, but I lost count. We finished moving the computers at about 8:30 a.m..

Then, we went back to the club room for leisure time. Gaming time, to be precise. No worries, because the Exco hustings was to start at 9 a.m., so it didn't eat into the schedlue.

Junqun, the self-appointed Games in-charge, brought lots of PS2 CDs for us... he tried (in vain) to show us that he ws an FF10 pro ... then we went on to less "personal" games (they didn't want Junqun to be the only guy playing with his PS2)... me and Hon Boon (both of whom were Star Wars geeks) tried out the Star Wars Battlefront game... we played the Battle of Geonosis part, and my only remark was "How did the Republic win the battle with such slow walkers?". The Theed battle (taken from Episode 1) wasn't that impressive either. My Droideka wouldn't shoot, and I had difficulties with the controls. I wished they would try more "sequel trilogy" battles like the Battle of Hoth or the 1st Death Star Trench Run, but they've already switched to playing Soul Calibur. I went to play Quake 3 with the rest of the guys, then.

During the Exco hustings we asked some typical questions to the year one Exco nominees... but by then I think most of the current Exco already had the choices in mind. The Forums issue was quite a major concern at that time.

Last year, when we started as trainee moderators at the College Forums, we were already an enthusiastic bunch (I could almost call myself a TJC Forums geek!), and the seniors had no worries about us. Since most of the ITC members were in Forums, our involvement in Forums actualy served to bond us as a group.

This year, however, most of the year ones who joined the moderators did not really come to forums that as often as we did, even at our constant urging. We are worried that when we step down, the new moderators would not be that active.

So last year was a year of active moderators and low level of activity in threads (I recall the various campaigns we launched to promote the Forums to the student body). This year was the direct opposite -- There's a high level of activity in the various sections of the Forums (I've just been checking out this class forum thread where 4 pages of messages were generated in ONE SINGLE DAY!!!) but low level of moderator participation.

Year ones, please keep the Forums team going strong!

Halfway through the hustingsm we were called to help test out this Knowledge building forums software... we tested out this thing some time ago but there were some changes made to the forums... just to change the way it looked. The whole thing was still as messy as the previous one we tested out. This time we were also as crappy as that time we tested this thing. I started the whole crap by posting messages titled "Ankur" (Ankur is, or rather was, one of the ITC Exco members). Soon there were lots of "Ankur" messages all around our forum.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Also, to add to the mess, we decided to move all the message titles to one single spot, and we succeeded!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

OK back to hustings... we asked only a few questions and off we went for lunch! During lunch time I checked with the bookshop and discovered that tht T-shirts were ready (thank God) but we didn't have enough money in the treasury to collect the shirts (they wanted at least 50% of the cost, which was $480). But still, it turned out fine (I hope the members would like it) and each shirt costs only $12, so it wasn't that expensive.

After lunch we went back to Club room to watch Jacky and Junqun play FIFA on PS2. Junqun vowed to thrash Jacky, but looks like he underestimated Jacky's prowess. Jacky won 2-NIL. Throughout the game (it was projected on the large screen) we were cheering like mad (most of us the time for Jacky) and for me, it was more exciting than the time I watched the World Cup Finals in 2002. Too bad there was no beer.

Next it was Mr Low versus Jigang, but I think we had to stop halfway because it was getting late and the hike had to start. So off we went, from College to Suntec on foot. The route was the same as that we took during the recee hike (duh!). Refer to the "Hike of the Year" post for details of the recee hike.

Of course, there would be new things happening even for repeats. Just when we walked past the College PE gate, it started to drizzle (what the heck?) and fortunately most of us grought umbrellas. And even more fortunate was that the rain stopped shortly.

I love Coconut drink.

And sorry for not mentioning in the Recee hike post that we saw a red kite stuck near the top of a tall tree. It was necessary to mention it now because on the actual hike, the kite was still there!

Near the canal with the beautiful forest beside it, we rested on some stone benches which were not ideal resting places because of the presence of freaky ants.

At the green bridge where there were lots of those metal chain strung between two metal poles... I wanted to jump over all of them, but I tripped over the second one and fell pretty badly, so I decided to behave decently after that.

The walk over Sheares bridge was one that's unforgettable! And what added to my joy was that at that point of our journey (which was quite near the end), it was only about half-past 3.

So we reached Suntec at about 4 p.m., not the expected 6 p.m.. Part of the reason was because while the Exco wanted to play games on the way to Suntec, the year ones were not exactly enthusiastic about this idea. Seriously, I myself did not really want to play Whacko too.

So we slacked at the Family Walk in Suntec city, and I went to see Hon Boon play his Jedi Outcast multiplayer on his laptop. Lightsaber throw is damn cool!

We went back to Bedok Central for dinner at Long John Silvers (the Terriyaki wrap was not bad!), than I went home by myself as I could not stay overnight... sob.

I heard that the year twos watched the entries for the I-skills video competition... some advertisements, I suppose.

That night I was wondering about this thing about "the peace of God". I was thinking that yes, the peace of God is not that kind of false peace which the world gives, but true peace -- that kind which can exist even in the midst of a storm.

I was also thinking... while the peace is good, what's the use of having peace if something irreversible has happened and I'm upset about it? Peace cannot turn back the clock and make things better right?

But then I realized that peace should be an end, not a means. If I expect peace to "make things better", then I'll be using peace as a means, not an end. And the Bible says that this kind of attitude is wrong.

On the 2nd day I arrived on College at about 7 a.m. when most of them were still sleeping.

In the morning, I played CS with bots (computer players) and set the gravity to extra-low values, causing all of us to float all over the place.

Then it was wet games. It was generally OK, except that Benson's hair was still dry at the end of everything. Following that was soccer, which I was still not good at. I almost played soccer barefooted, but the ground was hot and I felt that removing my sandals wouldn't make my skills any better, so in the end I still played on sandals.

Lunch was at Bedok Cantral KFC, where I saw Zhiren too. The O.R. fillet burger was nice, but a bit too small (at least it was still bigger than Shrooms, which I would call bite-sized).

We followed the year ones to Giant, where they were supposed to buy the barbecue stuff on their own. After that, we went back to College for a brief period of time (CS for me again) before going to East Coast park.

Our trip there (on bus) was quite relaed as Jigang's dad offered to help transport the stuff to the pit. I had to borror Yufeng's slippers as my sandals were spoilt.

I must say, at the pit, the year ones started the fire real quickly! At least quicker than my class BBQ last year.

The BBQ session was very eventful... we almost ran out of drinks and had to impose rations (WTH?!) but some of the members went to buy new bottles of drinks... so much that we had to leave the unfinished bottles for the coming Exco investiture!

Then it was the sausages part... they didn't take out all the packets of sausages, and so after having only 1 sausage and seeing that there was none left on the pit and in the food tray, I almost freaked out! I won't allow myself to eat only 1 sausage at any BBQ session! Fortunately there were still uncooked sausages, but then my sausages consumption rate was lower than last year's. Much lower.

Halfway through the session, the year two Exco people (including me lah!) went to the beach which was far enough from the pit for us to do some secret discussion. And discuss we did, about the new Exco. I thank God that certain choices were made for certain posts, and I feel that all the new Exco members will be able to do their job well.

There's no such thing as a "high" or "low" post in the Exco... the different titles just determine different places and situations for a person to shine.

Before we announced the new Exco, there were even more funny stuff... we brought 3 potatoes and 2 sweet potatoes (especially for Kuti) and one of the potatoes became like charcoal (and had to be cut using a Swiss knife!) near the end of the BBQ session. The other 2 potatoes were edible, and were actually quite delicious!

The session ended with cleaning up and the announcement of the new Exco. It was actually quite late... about 10 p.m., so I was grateful that Jigang's dad gave us (me, Ming Hwee, Kuti) a lift to a convenient spot in Marine Parade. I took a cab back to Tampines, and reached Tampines at about 11 p.m..

Just imagine if I had to go look for transport myself. Mum would have to wait until about 12 a.m.!

P.S. Check out this pic which I found on my College forums.

God is faithful

OK I've been very busy these days to update my blog.

On Tuesday morning while I was on one of my fridge raids I was this kind of candy my Dad bought... the name translates as "Cow Skin Candy." Didn't try it, though.

Tuesday evening was Electone time for me agin. This time my teacher suggested that I change some of the songs I will use for examination... because some of my current songs were not too challenging.

Which meant that I had to give up Mission Impossible Theme from my list of repertoires. Big sigh. That song was... OK I admit it was a bit easy lah... lots of holding chords... but it was nice, nonetheless.

And I would not take the Melodies of Life song from FF9. I can't even play the introduction well. And it's in E major, an unfamiliar key to me.

Or you may tell me to challenge the limit and not stay in the comfort zone. But I've got no time and patience for that, especially when it's not a song that I would want to learn despite having to take great pains.

Wednesday morning was horrible. With a ray of hope nevertheless.

As I was busy on Tuesday, I switched on my (or rather Mum's) handphone and I recieved more than 10 messages the bookshop uncle sent me. The messages said the same thing -- that the T-shirt design I gave him was too light.

AGAIN! I had enough of his "not clear enough" complaints already... didn't know what to do. And June Camp was on this Friday.

And the uncle went overseas on Tuesday.

Just as I was giddy from seeing this shocking news, I recieved another message from my fellowship friend Xiaoyun. It says "Any prayer requests?".

I was stunned. Just when I thought all was against me, this little message reminded me of God's faithfulness (not to mention his perfect timing) and of course, I replied her with this T-shirt problem I was facing.

I still don't know whether we will get our T-shirts on Friday... sorry guys if the T-shirt cannot be done by then. Pray lah. I tried very hard to make the picture suitable for T-shirt printing. The uncle kept saying cannot... too light... too blurred.

Too many times already.

Still, God is faithful.

Oh... regardless of whether there will be T-shirt or not, the camp tomorrow should be very exciting... with the hike and all. Tomorrow I'll be wearing my very first pair of toe-socks!

OK I'm that country bumpkin again...

Spectacular ending

I had quite an exciting weekend.

On Saturday it was nothing special, except that I went to Eastpoint with Mom to collect my new pair of spectacles. It fitted quite well, wasn't too tight... looked pretty sturdy.

Thank God for spectacles... an invention which benefited people like me who should have become half-blind long ago.

On Sunday, I recieved a call from the Bookshop uncle about... yep it's the IT Club T-shirt again. He said this time that some of the stuff in the background of the picture still wasn't that clear... so I had to go Paint and type in the "letters" (I just used 1s and 0s for the "binary numbers" feel)... In the end the picture still looked quite "Matrix" and the odd alignment of the digits made the picture less artificial.

It had better work out this time. 4 more days to June camp!

I installed Flash MX and Dreamweaver MX on my computer as well, after doing the T-shirt picture. Heh, now there're finally some cool softwares on my computer!

Still, I lack Microsoft Office... never mind... Project Work was long over. But then again, Office XP has this photo-editing software which is damn cool (I have it in my College computer)!

Yesterday evening wasn't a bed of roses.

First I had a freak fever all of a sudden. That, however, wasn't really the problem.

The real deal was, when I was having a shower, the right lens of my new spectacles suddenly came off the frame and... the next instant I was stepping on glass shards.

Each lens costs $90, mind you.

So I'm with my good old spectacles again... it's really durable, this one... lasted about a year, I think.

Oh, after reading Kelvin's blog entry about going to Kinokuniya and the other one about Spyware... I have some comments.

It's not Karma Sutra, but Kama sutra.

Also, in the Kino branch in Bugis there're lots of "those kind of" books there... gave me a hard time trying not to look at those stuff. Most of them from Japan, I think.

I wonder why they sell those stuff in Singapore...

Which reminds me... I'll be going to Kino again some time to look for manga. I think I'll go to the Orchard branch first. I didn't spot manga books in Bugis Kino, I think.

Talking about Spyware, I think this is quite a good Spyware-scanning software.

Microsoft Anti-spyware Beta version

Isaiah out.

1977: A Star Wars special

1977, the year when TJC was founded.

On the other side of the planet, there was an even greater event which many around the world would remember the year 1977 for.

The beginning of an epic saga, set in "a galaxy far far away" -- Star Wars!

The special effects company, ILM (Industrial Light + Magic) was founded at that time for the sole purpose of creating all the special effects needed in SW. Later, of course, it helped other movies with their visual effects too.

It was said that George Lucas, the guy who concieved the idea of this movie, wanted to depict a scenario of war between a technological superpower and an army less advanced in millitary technologies -- an analogy of the Vietnam War.

I read somewhere too, that Lucas did this movie to illustrate this principle: that there's a God, and there's a good and bad side in the society.

Whatever the reason behind this film series, it was the first of its kind (its appealing visual effects and its influence on later movies).

When the first SW film was finished near 1977, it was said that it would actually be the 4th episode of an entire saga which would consist of 6 episodes (2 trilogies).

Sounds puzzling to some...

The so-called "Original trilogy" (Ep. 4 to 6) was about how Luke Skywalker joined the rebellion against the evil Galactic Empire and later became a key character in galactic history. Also, in this trilogy, Luke would strive to redeem his father who became a servant of the evil Emperor.

The prequels (Ep. 1 to 3), which began in the late 1990s, were to give an elaboration of the events that shaped the stories in Ep. 4 to 6, including the rise and fall of Luke's father, Anakin.

In my opinion, the addition of the prequels to the sequel trilogy changed the focus of the story altogether... the story, seemingly centered on Luke (if you look only at 4 to 6) , would now have Anakin as its central character, whose rise, fall and redemption would take place throughout the span of the 2 trilogies.

That's what the makers of this film wanted too: that viewers would now watch this series from the episodes 1 to 6, instead of watching from 4 to 6, then 1 to 3.

Here are a few classic scenes throughout the trilogies...

Episode 1: The Phantom Menace

  • "I have a bad feeling about this" -- You can hear that in almost every episode.

  • "I'd just as soon kiss a Wookie!" What Leia said when Han suggested a good-bye kiss.

Palpatine's power play

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
"I love democracy. I love the Republic." -- Palpatine

The first 3 episodes give us the events that contribute to Palpatine's rise to power.

In the beginning, he was a Senator in the Galactic government who suggested a restriction on trade routes, and behind the scenes, ubder the identity of Darth Sidious, he instigated the Trade Federation to impose a blockade on planet Naboo (Palpatine's home planet).

The Senate then was inefficient in taking urgent action against this blockade, so the Queen of Naboo (Padme) suggested that a new Chancellor should take over the government.

Due to public sympathy, Palpatine was then elected as Chancellor.

Ten years later, he instigated a Separatist movement against the government (as Darth Sidious), and negotiations between the Separatists and the government wasn't working, so the Senate finally voted to give Chancellor Palpatine emergency powers, with which he used to create an army of cloned humans to fight the Separatists.

Palpatine became the first Chancellor with a galaxy-wide millitary force.

Once his motive (gaining military strength) was achieved, he orchestrated the rest of the war (he's in charge of both sides, remember?) and finally, after he gained a new apprentice (Darth Vader), he moved the whole Separatist force to planet Mustafar and ordered Vader to dispose of them on that planet.

With Order 66 (a pre-programmed order to the Republic's clone troopers), Palpatine made the Clones turn against their Jedi generals and kill them all.

With no more political opposition, Palpatine declared himself Emperor in an urgent Senate session. His control over the galaxy was complete.

Sounds Korean to me

"I guess you don't know everything about women yet." -- Leia to Han

Luke and Leia, who did not know that they're siblings, first met on the Death Star in Episode 4. Luke joined Obi-wan for his mission to rescue Leia mainly because he was mesmerised by this hologram of Leia he saw back on his planet Tatooine, and wanted to know more about her.

Later during the movies, Leia sort of developed feelings for Luke. Reminds you of some typical Korean drama right?

Han also wanted to court Leia, and suggested more than once that Leia might have feelings for him. In an attempt to dispel Han's myth, she kissed Luke directly in front of Han and friends.

In the later missions, however, Luke was always away from the "clique", so Leia was with Han most of the time. Han's unbashed approach towards Leia sort of swept her off her feet and left her confused.

At the critical moment, when Han was about to be carbon-frozen, Leia confessed that she did have feelings for him.

However, Han himself was still unsure of whether Leia still had feelings for Luke. In their mission at Endor moon, after Luke told Leia that they were actually twins, Leia was still registering the truth when Han approached. He thought that she and Luke were sharing secrets that she couldn't tell Han, and that made him frustrated.

Near the end of the mission, however, Leia finally told Han that Luke was her twin brother, so... basically Han's only competition was eliminated!

But I think, even if Luke wasn't her brother, Leia would stll choose Han in the end, because she had been through much more with Han than with Luke (with Luke away to either train as a Jedi or to redeem his Dad).

Darth Redeemed

"Clouded, this boy's future is" -- Yoda

One of the things I like the most in Star Wars is Anakin's redemption and his reconcillation with Obi-wan.

When I first got to know the story of Return of the Jedi (through the novelization of the movie), the return of Anakin to the good side was just another part of the whole story to me. Now, however, after watching Revenge of the Sith I came to sympathize with Anakin, and his return to the good side became much more meaningful.

Originally it was planned that the Emperor's throne room was in a lava planet, and that in the end Vader would save Luke by grabbing the Emperor and tumbling into the lava together with him. Later, however, the throne room was set in the Death Star, and Vader would not fall into the reactor shaft with the Emperor. Instead, the dying Vader would ask Luke to remove his mask, so father and son would have a last look at each other, face to unmasked face. This part, I believe, made the ending much more touching as well.

Anakin Skywalker was a ten-year old kid when he was discovered to have great potential of being a Jedi, but the Jedi council had their reservations against training him because he was too old (at that time, Jedi training starts from infancy) and that his "future was clouded". However, he did get trained eventually.

Anakin sort of fell in love with Padme before he became a Jedi, and ten years after his training began, he and Padme both realized that they had feelings for each other during a safety retreat. Despite the restrictions on marriage among Jedi at that time, the couple married each other.

It was this Jedi restriction on marriage that caused him to keep the marriage a secret even from his own mentor, Obi-wan. Padme soon became pregnant, and Anakin had premonitions of Padme dying at childbirth.

Just when Obi-wan was away on a mission, Chancellor Palpatine, who revealed that he was a Sith lord (enemy of the Jedi, a group which endorsed the use of the dark side of the Force), took advantage of Anakin's fears and promised him a way to save Padme if Anakin became his apprentice. Anakin originally wanted to kill Palpatine upon knowing he was a Sith, but because of Padme, he did not do so. He even impaled Mace Windu when he was about to kill Palpatine, causing Palpatine to have the upper hand in the fight and kill Windu.

Anakin's guilt and his desperation made him unwillingly (it's obvious in Episode 3) become Palpatine's apprentice, with the new name of Darth Vader.

After doing what Palpatine ordered (which was to kill Palpatine's political enemies), Anakin was visibly guilty at what he'd done and he could tell no one else. Obi-wan got to know of Anakin's evil doings and that Anakin was the father of Padme's baby (which turned out to be twins).

Padme went to Mustafar, the lava planet, to dissuade Anakin from continuing in his slaughter, but when he saw Obi-wan in his wife's ship (he sneaked in), he thought his wife had betrayed him, and he even wanted to strangle Padme to death, but was stopped by Obi-wan.

The two had a fight, but eventually Anakin fell down on cooling lava and got burnt to near-death. Palpatine put Anakin in a life support suit and his new life as Vader began. Palpatine told Vader that he himself kiled Padme in his anger, and Vader was in anguish.

In actual fact, Padme died at childbirth (Anakin's turn to dark side seemed to be unable to prevent that...), leaving behind a pair of twins, Luke and Leia.

So it was 20-odd years of serving the Emperor, thinking that his child died with Padme. Vader became a ruthless warlord, killing subordinates for slight errors.

Soon he got to know of the existence of Luke Skywalker (the surname was so damn obvious), and so did the Emperor, who had a premonition that Luke could destroy him. When Vader was ordered to kill Luke, he suggested instead that Luke could be turned to the dark side.

After battling with Luke and revealing that he was Luke's father, I think Vader had sort of wavered in his intentions. For example, he did not kill Admiral Piett when he lost the Rebel ship Millenium Falcon, while he did kill Captain Needa earlier on for a similar reason.

Also, while Luke's intentions regarding Vader had purely been revenge (since Obi-wan lied that Vader "killed" Luke's father), the realization that Vader was his father changed his agenda from revenge to redemption.

Luke believed that there was still good in his father (like Padme did when she was dying), and Vader's reservations against killing Luke was evidence of that, even though Obi-wan doubted so.

When Luke surrendered himself to the Imperial troops and met his father again, he tried to convince his father to turn back, and while his father denied having any trace of Anakin Skywalker in him, he did say "It's too late for me, son".

What I think was that he thought he had nowhere else to go besides serving the Emperor.

In the final battle between father and son, Luke still believed that there's some good in his father, and that he felt a conflict in Vader's mind. He refused to kill Vader even at the moment when he was able to do so. In the end, his persistence did pay off: Vader renounced the evil that's in him, and destroyed the Emperor.

Back to the father-and-son-face-to-face moment again... and then to the very end when Anakin died and returned to the light side of the Force with Obi-wan and Yoda... the reconcilation of old friends whose friendship turned sour unnecessarily.

Ever since this experience, Luke believed a lot in redemption and forgiveness as well. One of his later disciples, Kyp Durron (in the extra-movie novels) sort of kept giving him trouble and criticised his methods (and Kyp did turn to the dark side for a few times), but Luke did not just expel him from the new Jedi order.

The "Chosen one"?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
"You were the chosen one!" -- Obi-wan to Anakin, who turned to evil

In Episode 1, Anakin was taken into the Jedi order because it was believed that Anakin was the prophesied "Chosen one" that will "bring balance to the Force".

Anakin did thrive well under the trainings and became a hero in the eyes of many.

But since Anakin turned to the dark side for the latter half of his life, could he still be the "chosen one"?

If you ask me, I would rather say that the "chosen one" is Luke.

I mean... Anakin did do well as a Jedi in the earlier years, but Luke became a Jedi much older than his father and only recieved what the layman would call a "crash course" from Yoda.

And he became a much stronger Jedi.

It's not wrong to say that he brought "balance to the Force" as well... I'm thinking along the lines that in the New Jedi Order that Luke established, Jedi could marry (that's a nice perk, I tell you). Even Luke himself married a fellow Jedi, but that's outside the movies.

But still, those who argue that Anakin is the "chosen one" say that in the end it was him who killed the Emperor.

Valid point.

Anyway, this "chosen one" thing was just part of the plot in Episode 1 which gave us a reason why Anakin was inducted into the Jedi order... this thing was not thought of while they were doing Episodes 4 to 6 in the 70's and 80's.

Or maybe Qui-gon was the chosen one since he was "chosen" to die in Episode "One".

Epilogue

Although the last movie in the series has come to an end, it is already announced (or so I think) that there will be a TV serial on Star Wars.

Also, numerous authors are currently adding on to the huge library of Star Wars novels (these novels made up what the Star Wars people called the "Expanded Universe"). A new novel which describes the events directly after "Revenge of the Sith" is coming up soon.

The launch of Star Wars Special Edition in the 90's delighted fans with enhanced visual effects, and there were several changes made to the movies again in the DVD set launched last year.

In the ending scene where Luke saw the ghosts of his mentors and his father, Anakin was originally played by actor Sebastian shaw (above). In the DVD edition (below), Anakin was played by Hayden Christensen (whom we see in the prequels).

P.S.

All in all, this has been an exciting saga filled with not only nice visual effects, but also with a gripping and even touching storyline. Thanks for enduring one of my longest posts ever in this blog, if you read it from top to bottom in the first place.
